Yet again, a strong team defense lead the way to a very comfortable win against a tall and physical Douglas County Huskies. team. Coming off from two wins on the previous weekend, the boys carried on to blow out the Huskies 43 x 17. The first quarter of this face off was nearly perfect on the defensive side with very strong help side defense and random blitz led by Sam and Walker. The Huskies were barely able to pass half court thanks to great anticipation by the YB Power defense. Bodies where on the right spot at the right moment time and time again which really put strong pressure on the offense with several team steals coming off active hands and communication, finally the boys were talking to each other better than ever before. Coach Cass and the staff highlighted this step forward in maturity to call each other out and hold each other accountable. The question for this young team now is: Can they do it consistently? On offense small forward #00 Tydus showed great control of his speed and used it to his advantage on the break. Now starting to focus on his court vision he was finding his shooters in #7 Marley who was able to sink three long range shots coming from great passes.

Then came game two vs. Premier. This was where defense really pushed the squad to a solid win against a strong and versatile team who could shoot the ball and run the break. As noted by Coach K in the post game huddle: " #3 Sam was the Power Chief for us tonight on defense". Despite being the smallest player on the court, he put on a defensive performance that stood head and shoulders above the rest. With a motor that never stopped and the perseverance of a hunter chasing its prey, he battled every possession with relentless energy. He was constantly talking on Premier's best handler, switching on bigs and holding his ground, directing teammates, and setting the tone with his voice. His anticipation was uncanny, reading plays before they developed and rotating on the help side to shut down drives. When it was time to blitz or trap, he dove into double teams with fearless intensity, creating chaos for the opposition. His heart was bigger than his frame, and his effort inspired his teammates to match his fire, proving that leadership doesn’t come from size but from willpower and determination. It is also important to highlight the physicality which #24 William has been playing with which makes for an intimidating front court presence alongside Walker. #0 Kyree kept his composure under pressure when the game got as close as 3 points. The team lead the whole game but had to show character to secure the 37 x 32 win when time ran out.
At the postgame talk, coach Cass and the staff challenged the boys to keep up the team work shown on defense, communicate loudly with each other, and focus on not taking a good shot, but creating a play for others to find a great shot. Coach Michael talked about "Energy givers vs. Energy takers". Noting that body language, effort, attitude, and overall coach ability on hard moments is what gives out energy to other teammates. Can you be an example of an Energy Giver teammate?
